the FAQ (for professionals)

What equipment do you have/use?

I am a firm believer that artists, not equipment, make art. That said, I love my gear! When we meet in person, you should ask me what my current favorite is; it's always changing!

Is your media preference film or digital?

On a professional level, digital photography is the way to be. It holds amazing potential for post-processing, and has all of the amazing optics of professional film photography. On a personal note, I was trained in, and LOVE film. I own a darkroom, loads of film cameras, and I continually participate in the traditional art of photography. So, the real answer to this question is, yes, they are both my preference.

Do you offer workshops for photographers?

YES! I believe in sharing information, and that we (professional photographers) are collaborators and allies, not competition. I also believe that, if I were to hold too tightly to the secrets of my profession, I would quickly fall out of date. Practicing an art is a continual discovery of something new, not perfectly recreating something that looked nice in the past. I don't have a set schedule for when my workshops come out, so I'd like to recommend a few things: First, follow me on twitter \\ @derksworks \\ that'll get you the latest from me... maybe even more than you bargained for. Second, shoot me a message through my website. I'd love to hear from you, and know a little bit more about your interests. Lastly, if you're in a rush to get some good learning, we should set up a 1:1 session.
