(My)The Red Car

A few weeks ago a very sad event transpired. My first car, the red car, the beast, the “can’t drive very well in the snow” car, the “anti-lock-breaks just make a noise and don’t really do anything” car, the “we can’t figure out that problem but we’ve totally taken it all apart and put it back together for free because we’re baffled” car, was towed away and stolen from me…. legally. I really think that legal theft is just about the worst thing ever. I was able to say my good-byes and take these pictures but it all happened too fast.

the last joke’s ont them though… i kept the ignition key.

Ah Yes! Quite a Car …. and very well built! As I recall the one time that I backed into the side of it with my van there was a large dent in my fender, however there seemed to be a rather small indentation on the side by the wheel in Old Red! My slider never could quite stay open after that! I do believe that “red” seemed to hae a nack for attracting passers by that like carrying baseball bats. I remember that delightful summer evening we shared the wonderful experience of leaving the Mud Hens Game and upon finding “Red” and our “Big Debbie” van, being able to open our car doors by just reaching in and not even having to roll down the windows! Ah yes…. the memories… and definitely quite a car!

  2. Jennifer Says:

Oh the Maroon Beast, as I fondly remember dear Red….the memories! One of the best was being caught by the police making out in Red @ the end of Far Hills rd (the street your parents lived on). That was awesome, and a classic memory in red.

I also remember looking for your car waiting at my parents house… or driving past other maroon beasts and thinking of you whether i was living in Toledo, Chicago, or Columbus.

Red was our luxurious vehicle on our first date, when you first held my had and i stroked the palm of yours. And i loved the fact that in the front there was a middle seat so we could sit closer together on our many drives, whether near or far it was definitely our “cuddle car”!

  3. Mom Derkin Says:

“The RED” was a gracious, hand-me-down gift from Grampa Harden when he moved to the Toledo area. I had his doctor’s advise and determined his driving days were over after and accident/injury in abt 2002. I tried to tell my Dad that driving with both feet wasn’t a good idea even if the totally bald tires weren’t an issue. Anyway. “The RED” came to live at our house and when it didn’t sell in the Trading Post it was given to Benjamin, then starting college. The miles it logged were many and in many directions I recall from Owens, BGSU, Beulah Beach, to Chicago, Columbus, Ann Arbor, to name a few. Little does my son know we installed a black box recorder so when Benjamin & Jennifer started logging “time” it may just have gone out on a local police scanner …hmmm my memory is a bit foggy on that one, sorry just can’t fully recall :) Anyway it served you Benjamin well, cost plenty in repairs, and had serious window issues as I remember. Thanks for the memory lane trip and the photo!

And Also for My Cactuses (song)

just so that we’re all clear on the subject, each song is a one time original and can not be replicated or re-recorded in anyway…. the original version of this song was much different and sung only to Jennifer. Enjoy. (requests for label signings or American Idol votes can be texted directly to me, just simply say “vote”, i’ll know what you mean)

Garden of the Gods: Blackberry Shootout

I was just on the phone last night with my good friend and a world changing photographer, Rowan Gilson. Amongst things talked about: I’m not going to be able to attend his wedding in May (very sad, I think he should change his date), I am super-excited about teaching portraiture and lighting again in September with IPS, Portland, OR is a really cool place (check his blog), skype appearances at parties, and lastly this post concerning our Blackberry shootout! Hopefully Rowan will post a reply on his blog with his half of our shootout.

Happy Birthday Mum

For years I have been promising my dear mother a photograph for her house that will be meaningful as well as beautiful. Returning home from my honeymoon to Ireland I said to myself, “THIS YEAR! This will be the year that my mother gets her image!” Little did I realize that I would find many images for my mom! So, here are the options, one of which will be printed and delivered next weekend.

DWBLOG-gift4mum-003The Beautiful Cliffs of Moher

DWBLOG-gift4mum-002The Serene Trinity College

DWBLOG-gift4mum-001The Valiant Castles of Dublin

Though my mom’s opinion is the only one that really matters I’m curious which one you think I should print?

Irvin

DerksWorks-Irvin-011The Lone Ranger had Silver, Paul Bunyan his Blue Ox, Batman had the Bat-mobile, and Adam now has Irvin. May this relationship be epic.

Andrew + Olivia

Andy and Olivia got married in Alaska and though I never saw any pictures from that ceremony, I could see the ripples of beauty from that day in the catch lights of their eyes. I was not present to photograph their picturesque Alaskan mountain top wedding with the crisp air and lush greens and vibrant blues, but it’s elegance was present in this past December in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was an honor to be their photographer, to record each glance and smile. If you know Andy or Olivia, I’m sure that you will agree that you can see the joy of their marriage in their eyes, I hope that my images show nothing less.

100% for Haiti: Photo-Auction!

Over the past few days my heart has been impressed by the need to help the victims in Haiti. In the best way I know how, I would like to raise money by auctioning off these 3 images from Hurricane Katrina’s 9th Ward when my brother, a few friends and I went down to be a part of the relief effort in the spring of 2006.

HaitiEBAY-1Photos for Haiti – proceeds go DIRECTLY to Haiti

it is my hope that this series will not only provide a resounding amount of financial support for the victims in Haiti but that it will also open a door of understanding and hope for the owner of this piece. i hope that each one of these images opens a door from our American minds to another world beyond ours. as we look and reflect on the times that we have personally been helped, encouraged, loved, cared for, we realize that we have the ability to continue that hope and support for our brothers and sisters around the world.
please check out my blog (www.derksworks.com) to get a more complete understanding of my heart in this matter and i hope, if you are able to bid on this image, it blesses you as much to give as it has been for me to put this series together.
details:
it’s a 13.5×20 inch print that i matted and framed out to 22×28 in a black wood frame. i think it looks pretty sweet.
shipping: dont worry about the shipping. i’ll take care of that part. we’re both giving to Haiti here.

Teaching Photography in Florida (Part 2)

Week two was even more spectacular than the first! Jennifer came down and hung out with the group as much as possible, she had lots of chillax’n to do but she still made time to be social. All of the workshop attendees seemed to be able to put their new found skills to good use and combine it with awesome editing techniques! If you are looking into photography as a possible career or even a serious hobby, the folks at IPS do it up right… you should  check ‘em out.

Love the pictures, Ben! Especially the ones of us shooting in action (so that’s what we look like!) and ones of you and Jennifer. Way fun.

Hope you both are doing well back in chilly Ohio. I hope its less gloomy than Indianapolis.
