He is an unstoppable force of joy and creativity, an artist to his core; a problem solver, encourager, and calming force all in one. Ever since his first roll of film was developed in high school, Benjamin knew that photography was his calling and the perfect place for all of his talents. Persisting through long hours, crafting deep relational meaning, and building photographs that speak to your heart through your eyes are all second nature to his relentless pursuit of serving others with his craft.
Well, that’s a little bit of an impossible question to answer because the truth is, while photography is my craft, everything that fulfills me in this work is personal and relational. The technical aspects of photography were, without a doubt, the hook that drew me in. Technology and science both digitally and in a traditional darkroom (side note, if you ever get a chance to watch a print get developed with chemicals, do it… it’s magical) are an endless puzzle of creative possibilities. The rabbit hole kept going deeper and deeper until I realized that beyond the technical aspects of photography there is a whole universe of relational intricacy that can use a camera as a gateway to caring about what you’re doing and who you’re doing it for. About the same time as I started dating my now wife and business partner Jennifer, I realized that weddings were awesome and wedding photographers had a unique opportunity to invest on a personal level with their clients. That’s when I knew that this was it. This was what I wanted to be doing. From there, I have been continually drawn in by the perpetually complex natures of love, joy, peace, kindness, heritage, and relationship. My understanding of life and love continues to deepen and I find myself on a never ending journey of grasping to create two dimensional versions of life’s beautiful moments of heart and soul.
Truth be told, my first camera wasn’t mine, it was my dad’s. His AE-1 with a 50 mm 1.8 lens, tales of his FTb, and unending encouragement were all gifts to me, investments in my photographic journey, long before I got my first camera. I was given a camera by a very kind neighbor after a while but that was never mine either. My first camera still sits on my shelf today and gets used frequently. Purchased at a camera show in Detroit, my father and I settled on a 1971 Canon F-1 with my own accompanying 50mm 1.8 FD lens. It was beautiful. Crisp, clean, robust shutter sound, detachable prism, and most importantly a father’s pride to go with it. There aren’t many things that come with a life time guarantee any more, but the pride and encouragement I get from my dad is one of them. Guaranteed.
My grandmother always said, “I like any color as long as it’s yellow.” Similarly, I believe that if you want something custom to fit within certain boundaries, you should be more specific with your boundaries. The Derk’s Works brand isn’t just about the color and the font, it’s a face and body to how much we care about each detail, both big and small in the work that we do. To me, graphic design has always been the slow-mo version of photography (like Neo dodging bullets in the Matrix or something). A lot of our photographic style follows action and forces me to compose an image in split-seconds. Design on the other hand is a process that can take hours or days for one final piece. Honing this cross discipline was a specific choice with the intent to better my photography learning to make better compositional decisions faster. I think any artist should spend some time in another discipline, it develops your voice in ways that one focused path never could. That said, we have had LOTS of help and contributions for very talented designers to get the brand to where it is now… but I still get my design kicks in where I can.
Gratefully I have the joy of having my work steeped in the complexity of human emotion. I also believe that we (humans) were created to exist for and to thrive on deep relationship. This prism allows me to draw inspiration from the poetry of music and art, but more importantly and valuably, my art is informed and shaped by the relationship that I have with my wife Jennifer. Our story not only gives me insight into love but also the full development of a long marriage and the meaningful things that last and are worth cherishing. As time goes on, our children grow, and I learn new things that will only add to my understanding of how to make the best images to withstand the test of time.
Ha, yeah… you might say that ;) The fact that his dry sense of humor plays perfectly with Bill Murray’s modestly depressed deadpan comedy doesn’t hurt either. His stories are well crafted, every detail is set carefully in place meticulously timed to guide his viewers on an emotional journey that is deeper than the story at hand. I think that’s the big thing that I relate to when I watch his movies. My goal when photographing people, is to make images that encourage ideas that are deeper than visual. I’ve said it so much it seems a little cheesy at this point, but I want people to come away from my images feeling what it was like to be in a place, not just see what it looked like. But I suppose, coming back to your actual question… yes… I really love Wes Anderson’s movies…. a lot.
Well, OBVIOUSLY! While I like all of the above, I think my preference (without other factors, of course) would be shake, cone, sandwich in that order… or all of the above…. if that’s an option.
I guess the easy answer is to say that I don’t make check lists, but the complex truth is that the deeper I go into this business, art, and the lives of others, the more I find beautiful nuances to explore. I never have to worry about getting repetitive in this work because I always focus on the spectacular differences and unique elements of each couple I am privileged to serve. Weddings might have traditional elements, but the beauty of marriage is anything but predictable.
You mean, other than “i’m going bald and like wearing hats? ;) Yes, actually. I grew up in Toledo, which is by many standards, mini-Detroit and home to the Mud Hens who are the farm team for the Tigers… all of these things are insularly to the fact that I’m not really a sports guy. I love baseball for heritage reasons just as much if not more than the sport. My great grandmother, my grandfather, and my father were/are all Tigers fans and I will stand in their shoes, listen on the radio, and cheer on my team rain or shine, win or loose as often as I can. I love an underdog story and they will be my underdogs until they finally make their comeback sometime in 2030… or so.
It is an honor and joy to see the love and families of past bridal couples grow! Congratulations Chris and Caitlin on your adorable son Solomon!

Beautiful baby & family shoot with sweet new baby Matilda, captured by our awesome associate photographer Rachel.

these pictures of Jen & Harry’s wedding are amazing. It was beautiful and so fun and you captured it.
Fabulous…….just like the day!!
Two thousand fourteen was dubbed “the year of killing it”, two thousand fifteen will be “the year of nurturing”. A stark contrast, I will admit… allow me to explain.
Last year we had the amazing privilege of being part of thirty-nine weddings! This is way more than we usually take on in a year and was every ounce the challenge that we expected. We kept meeting awesome people…so we took on the work; additionally we photographed some amazing families, graduates, mitzvahs, and businesses. As we found awesome stories to tell we found new ways to express the heart of what was happening in each moment. It was our goal and became our reality to expand Derk’s Works this year by hiring Jennifer full time. This addition gave me the ability to do more shooting and editing, knowing that client communication and business organization was given it’s proper care and attention.. way better than I have ever been able to do on my own (sorry about those late e-mails guys). Jennifer didn’t join the team to just be an office manager though, she is an amazing business mind, growth strategist, and visionary in every sense of the definition. We also had the honor of bringing on two additional associate photographers this year, giving us the ability to connect with even more amazing people this next year.
On a personal level, Jennifer and I bought our very first house, enjoyed our five year anniversary, and each turned thirty! Then, as we thought things might calm down a bit, we found out we were expecting our first child! I can not express how excited I am for this… I’m pretty sure I could cry if I thought hard enough about it right now. To know that the love I have for my wife will be duplicated in a new way as I hold our baby, to know that the way I feel loved and appreciated by her will be replicated for our child, to understand a fraction more of how much God loves us… I know I’ll be a sobby mess at the hospital… and I can’t wait.
Our baby seems like as good of a segue as any to bring us to two thousand fifteen. Life is a scary and daunting thing if you look at it the wrong way. If I get too far ahead of myself, I can ponder what the future might bring and be absolutely terrified. But if I slow down and trust that in this crazy and overwhelming life, God cares about me and wants the best for me, He has a plan, and He wants to use me in the lives and stories of others, then tomorrow morning is always awesome and will always be something to look forward to. It is with this appreciation for new things and beautiful growth that I look forward to two thousand fifteen, to the birth of my child, the growth of my business, to the cherishing of relationships and friendships, to the year of nurturing.

A Year of Change & Fulfillment
This year was full of moments, memories, challenges and accomplishments that have truly been defining and refining me as an individual, believer, wife, friend, sister, daughter, entreprenuer and now mother. It is simultaneously beautiful and overwhelming to look back over this year. As I reflect at the beginning of 2014, I was on a personal journey of nurturing a healthy & caring relationship with my body emotionally and physically. I officially became addicted to my barre workout, but also discovered a new depth of God’s beauty and love for me, as His daughter and creation made in His image. This journey took me from a constant battle with my body and mind, to loving, enjoying and caring for the way I am eating and living to now, ending this year, allowing my body to be used to grow our new little one.
The change this year was in nearly every area of my life. Benjamin and I started this year thinking about looking for a new house to make our home. In May (and in a matter of literally minutes) we found and made and offer 824 S Remington. We moved in this past July and started building not only our dream kitchen, but the next phase of our life together! Friends and family made our move to Bexley a wonderful experience and as we celebrated our first christmas in our new home we feel so blessed by God’s timing and provision.
When changing your home why not also change your job! This summer I left my position at my corporate job to partner and pursue with passion Derk’s Works with my husband. After many conversations, prayers, financial number crunching and more, we made the leap and I couldn’t be happier!
This Fall we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary and Benjamin and I both turned 30! We wanted to run into this incredible milestones with a big bash…so we went to Paris and London! But before we left we received the most important, surprising, scary and exciting news so far…we are having a BABY….OMG a baby! Paris was filled with sights, adventures, art and delicious food, but it was also filled with long conversations about our child, our new family. It was filled with constant silent prayers of blessing as our baby was being formed, prayers for wisdom and preparing our hearts to welcome and raise this child to know truth, love and courage! Creating these memories with Benjamin and sharing them with our family and friends was truly a highlight and lifelong memory from this year!
Though nearly every arena of my life experienced crazy change there are several constants that surround me and that I cling to today and always. I serve a God who loves me, grants me undeserved grace and provides for my every need, even before I know I need it. I am beyond blessed my the selfless love and hard work of my best friend and husband Benjamin and I am encouraged, prayed for and supported at every turn by my parents, siblings, family and friends.
I am blessed, encouraged, a bit tired, but so excited to enter 2015! Cheers to new adventures, leading with love and enjoying the little moments!
-Jennifer
