Alright, I’ll just warn you right now, this is a long one. I tried trimming the selection a little further but then I thought, “nope, I’m gonna take a ‘selfish’ today.”
Last month we went with my Derkin family to the awesome state of Colorado for my younger brother’s wedding! In the process we added on a few extra days for family vacation. I’m pretty sure our only regret was that we wish it could’ve been longer. Not to spoil anything from the images but, the whole trip was stunning. Sam and Nicole’s wedding was on the spring equinox, the day from which all the days only get longer and more beautiful… if that’s not the most poetic day to get married, then I don’t know what is. I couldn’t be happier for my brother and was honored to be in his wedding. Though it is one of about four weddings I’ve ever been in without shooting it, I just couldn’t help myself, and I made a deal with their super-talented photographer Hannah to let me be part of their portraits anyway.
I’m not sure what it is about the Colorado air, colors, water, or mountains, but it is a magical place and I am honored every time I get to go back. I hope the next trip isn’t very far away.
Pancakes with my dad has always been a longstanding tradition. Now, another generation gets in on the action.
The colors of Colorado’s earth are pure and magical. I will never get over these shades of green.
This straight razor was hand restored by our friends at Yellowood Design, replacing the cracked plastic pieces with hand shaped wood from reclaimed barn wood. I’m not too sure on the exact origin of the razor, whether it was my grand father’s business partner’s or if it was his fathers, but the barn wood was from Benjamin Rowley’s grandfather’s barn and the whole thing is just SO dang cool.
Little known fact, Solomon had a HUGE poop five minutes before the ceremony and directly preceding this photo. We don’t often brag about how quick we can change a diaper, but I have to say that we were pretty proud of this Indianapolis 500 racing pit speed change.
Shortly after this photo and right after I said, “I don’t think that rock is going to be a good foot hold Sam.” I fell into the river for a hot second.
This year, Derk’s Works has been up to some new things, some old things, and some adventurous things. The one thing that has been consistent though, this year and all years, is the love we have for our clients. Actually, if it’s possible, we love you more than ever (such a dad thing to say, I know). But, if I may summarize our feelings, we want to express that we are deeply grateful.
(Yes, it does feel odd to use this photo that was taken before Solomon was born, but we just got it back from the film lab and it seemed a shame NOT to use it… He’ll get his own blog post, don’t worry…)
When we photograph your life and your moments, we count it as sacred to be invited into your space. We love the community that has formed with each of you.
In this season of thankfulness, we can’t help but send our love your way.
Excited to share a small preview from our July Mini Sessions at Schiller Park. We have two more dates available this year. September 25th at Franklin Park Conservatory and October 16th at Jeffery Mansion. Be sure to shoot us an email to snag your session, limited availability remains!
Vacation. This year was a restorative year. Not because we caught up on hours of sleep, but rather we enjoyed quality time as a family of three and as a part of my larger family. The joy and contentment of time together, outdoor adventures and watching your child play for HOURS on a beach filled my heart with rest and restored the fuel for the day to day.
Having visited the Upper Peninsula of Michigan since I was a young child, I still marvel at it’s beauty and simplicity and the way each year we enjoy or experience something new. From hours of hiking along the pictures rocks with family, to warm sunny days on Lake Superior and late night cards and chats, the UP is a great family get away and something we cherish. Sharing and creating these memories with brothers, sisters, parents and cousins just makes it all the more special!
So enjoy a collection of phone and camera images from this year’s vacation!
Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind. -Seneca
